About
Mike McElwee
Growing up an “Army brat” gave Mike an uncommon perspective on the world. An early exposure to the graphic art of comic books struck a resounding creative chord that inspired his interest in honing his drawing skills and developing a unique graphic style. During his high school years Mike received many awards for his drawings and could be found selling them on the sidewalk at the local mall in Bradenton Florida.
Attending Troy State University gave Mike the opportunity to study Art and Theater. Through his involvement with many theatrical productions he furthered the development of his style and gained an intimate appreciation for lighting, mood and movement . All integral parts of his work.
An unlikely combination of guitars, comic books , hot rods and Frank Lloyd Wright provided the inspiration for his sense of design. The beautiful lines of classic cars and the linear beauty of modern architecture gave him his appreciation of form, line and design. Automobiles and architecture also inspired the use of; copper, steel and wood as building materials while the process of building several classic hot rod pickup trucks afforded Mike the industrial skills necessary to create his unique works.
Throughout the 1980s Mike performed as a solo acoustic artist , as well as , with his rock band Pendragon. In addition to performing Mike became a certified Guitar Technician working on the likes of Bo Diddly and Bruce Springsteen’s guitars. A pervasive lifelong passion for music and genuine love affair with the guitar bring full circle the diverse and varied influences on Mike’McElwee’s concept and vision that comes to life in his truly unique sculptures.
